A German Mishap

Okay, So German is a pretty tricky language. And my struggles unfortunately can humorous sometimes..

So I tried saying "goodnight" the other night.

So I said "gute-nackt"

Little did I know the "goodnight" is actually "gute- nacht"

One letter difference..To my surprise,

Nackt is naked.

Everyone loves the exchange student who wishes them a good time when they're naked.

54 000: Miles and Cups of Coffee

So before you bookmark this blog( I hope you thought about it), let me explain one thing: I'm horrible at this. I may have one of the worst memory when it comes to remembering important things. But I'll try my best.

Okay. So I've been here for 5 weeks. Thats 50 400 minutes, hence the title. But to be honest, it feels like 2 minutes. So know for the big burning question:what have I been doing?

Okay I'll do my best here, you may have to bare with me. My first four weeks were occupied by school, Myself and twenty five exchange students were thrown together for a language course, which was nicely located in a mall. We wrote tests, and some passed and some joined me in the group that failed miserably. Apparently knowing 1-10 in german was not going to get me very far. We were divided into two groups and then the fun began. So the first weekend I was here, I somehow got roped into going on a hiking trip with my host rotary club. I was a little skeptical about the whole thing, but in the end it turned out to be a really enjoyable experience. But I mean it had to be better then my last hiking experience which included rain forests, poisoness spiders, and a whole lot of hot. It had to be better then that. Let me tell that you that coffee was a saviour that weekend. I think we walked for about 11 hours on the entire weekend, but the food was great, and I had fondue for the first time which was better than I thought it would be. So then there was more german times for the next week. Then on the following Saturday, we went to something called the "Flag Parade". In a nut shell it was the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. We met all the exchange students and were placed in groups with a big flag, and we had out lovely blazers on. Then we went to this huge like auditorium thing. And then they opened these big doors and started announcing countries(please keep thinking about the opening ceremonies reference- it will help) and then we walked in a were waving, and there was a ton of people clapping, and now I no longer have to feel the void of being on the canadian olympic team, thank god.

But that's it for now. Life's good.

Travel and Triumphs

Wow. So I'm here. Well I've made it. I'm here safe and sound. No Anna, I did not miss my connecting flight in Frankfurt. But you're right. That is a friggin maze. During my 18 hour travelling experience, I've realized something. It was my first time not seeing someone or talking to someone I knew. And thats when it hit me. I wasn't in Kansas anymore. After sitting with two of the most grouchiest European women ever, I got a break and had a three seater on the way too Zurich. Just a note: When ever your flight attendants do not speak a word of english is when you know your "lost in translation". I arrive in Zurich, it's funny how we know we are about to meet someone important and its just a primal instinct to find a mirror and make sure that your presentable, well let me tell you. Presentable was no word to describe me, it say more on the lines of walking pimple and greasy hair. I go through the gates into the luggage claim, which i did find considering everything either ended with -ich or started with ober. I couldn't find my family anywhere, getting a little nervous. So then I decide to break open the kit-bag and pull out the beacon of hope which is also known as the "red blazer". I don't as much as put it on and magically out of nowheres my family of four appear behind the glass.

So I smile and wave, and get my 2000 ton bags off the converbelt, hit a women with one and pop in on a cart. I walk through the exit and a wave of emotion hit me. Wow. So I'm here.

I am told briefly that I have to get my picture taken, but never told the reason why, so we go on this hike around the Zurich airport trying to find a photo-booth, needless to say the picture was a disaster(see description of myself after getting off the plane). So we walked to car and on the way there "breaking free" from high-school musical started playing on the radio(I know, so lame). And at that moment I knew, that this year was one that I was never going to forget.
